As summer winds down, we’re kicking off the fall season with our “Welcome Back” monthly social dance on Saturday, September 21st! New time! New place! We are pleased to have Wanda Kivitt joining us to get the evening started with a mixer-style Waltz workshop at 7:00 p.m., followed by general dancing to ballroom music until 9:45 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.
As promised, in our efforts to support and encourage the social aspect of our dances, we will have solo tables available, as well as a fun merengue mixer part way through the evening, along with our usual two line dances. If you didn’t catch it in our newsletter, below are suggested guidelines that we ask you to consider as we make strides to ensure that all of our guests have a good time.
Let’s welcome back the season in VBDS style and make this September one to remember. We can’t wait to see you back on the dance floor!
Proposed guidelines at VBDS social dances:
- All leads (even if attending as a couple), will commit to dancing with two solo follows during the evening. This requires acceptance by partners as well that they will give up two dances through the evening (a chance to socialize a bit or grab a drink or snack). This will help to address this imbalance without putting the majority of the responsibility on only one or two “volunteer” leads for the entire evening.
- Two tables will be reserved for solo dancers (follows and leads), to make it easy to know who may be looking to be asked to dance.
- Both leads and follows are encouraged to ask other solo dancers to dance. The skill level of each dancer should not matter, as the focus is on socializing and having fun. It is an accepted dance etiquette tenet that asking someone to dance is not an opportunity to correct or coach your partner, especially if unsolicited.
- We will endeavor to have mixer-style workshops to start off our social dances, as well as a second mixer dance later in the evening.
We hope all dancers will help us as a club and be part of the solution to making our monthly social dances enjoyable and successful for all guests. More information on the etiquette of social dancing can be found here.
