Technique classes for Standard and Latin

Technique classes continue Friday evenings at Centennial United Church. The dances for each are Tango & Viennese Waltz and Cha Cha & Samba but if you’ve taken one of these classes you know, Victor leans heavily into the technique making the genre or specific steps almost redundant. These classes are definitely a good workout for muscles you don’t normally use in the way proper technique requires. Both classes run March 8th to April 26th at Centennial United Church. The Standard Technique class from 6:30-7:30 – more info here, and the Latin Technique class from 7:30-8:30 – more info here.

Workshops with Gaétan – Using Head Weight for Balance and Dynamic Movement

Our third three-week workshop series with Gaétan focuses on the importance of and how to use head weight for balance and dynamic movement. Too often our focus is on our feet, knees, hips, ribcage, frame, rotation, sway, etc. Yes we think about our head but which way it’s pointing rather than how it can help us keep our balance or help us move. Ten-ish pounds 5 or 5-1/2 or 6 feet from the floor can have a significant impact on everything underneath. Learn how to use it to your advantage. These workshops will run every second Sunday starting February 25th – more info here.

Newcomer Level Competition Preparation Workshops – Latin and Standard

In the before times, each year a few novice dancers would take the plunge and try competing. For some it was a one-and-done, for others it was the start of a new passion. For all of them, competing was something totally not on their radar when they first started dancing. Covid and the long climb out seemed to squelch that annual migration of a few dancers to the competition realm. Victor and your dance committee want to change that. Our idea is to host a series of workshops to teach you routines (Cha Cha and Waltz) and teach you everything you need to know about competing: marshalling, entrance, set-up, dancing of course, what to do if you get bumped, presenting your partner at the end of the dance and how to exit the floor. The Island Fantasy Ball competition runs on June 1st and 2nd and they make it super easy for Newcomers – one Latin dance: Cha Cha and one standard dance: Waltz. Our goal is to create a team and use that camaraderie to support and encourage each other as we dip our toes into what appears dark and cold but is actually quite warm and inviting. More info on the workshops can be found here.

Classes for January, February and March are up!
